Parrying is one of the key combat mechanics in Neverness to Everness. Mastered well, it cancels incoming damage and triggers a critical counter. Mistimed, it leaves you exposed.
What is a parry
A parry is an active block at the exact moment the enemy strikes you. Successful, it:
- Fully cancels damage
- Recharges your Cycle Energy
- Puts you in Critical Dodge (brief invincibility state)
- Opens a massive counter window
The visual indicator to know
During an enemy attack animation, a parry circle appears around the target. The moment this circle closes and touches the enemy is your window. Tight timing, but visually clear.
Important: do not confuse with the dodge indicator. The rule is simple:
- Circle → you parry
- Cross → you dodge (the attack is unparriable)
The 4 ways to trigger a parry
- Basic attack: press attack within the window. The simplest method.
- Redirect skill: use a redirect ability during the window.
- Support skill: switch active character at the parry moment. The incoming character triggers the counter.
- Critical Dodge Counter: critical dodge in the window, gives you brief invincibility + counter.
Where to train safely
Boxer Anomaly Commissions, unlocked early in the adventure, are designed to train parry and dodge mechanics. Low damage, readable patterns, ideal for understanding the timing.
Also: the first chapter 1 bosses have slow, exaggerated animations, perfect for getting used to the system.
Bosses that punish a missed parry
Some bosses have attacks marked dodge-only (cross, no circle). Spamming parry on those patterns will cost you dearly. Learn the list before each serious Anomaly Hunt, see our boss guide.
Advanced strategy: parry-switch
Meta method: when a boss attacks, switch to your highest Cycle Intensity character during the parry. You combine the parry counter with a massive Esper Cycle reaction. This is what separates a casual player from a competitive one on elite Anomaly Hunt.
5 practical tips
- Learn a boss pattern in safe mode before attempting aggressive parry.
- Activate Lock-On: without it, the parry circle can be off screen.
- Reduce visual noise: disable heavy VFX in options if possible.
- Invest in characters with high Cycle Intensity (see Cartridges guide) to exploit windows.
- Parry is a skill to practice. Do not judge a character before 50+ serious attempts.
